The specie Douglas Fir

Douglas Fir is a coniferous wood originating from the USA.  There, it is one of the most widely used utility woods and the most important structural timber.  Douglas Fir was first planted in Germany from 1868, initially in Baden-Württemberg.

Like Pine and Larch, Douglas Fir is a heartwood tree.  In this kind of tree there is a marked difference in colour between the outer light sapwood and the inner reddish-brownish heartwood.

The structure of the clear annual rings produces a marked grain on the longitudinal surfaces.

Douglas Fir darkens under the effects of light and through weathering acquires a silver grey, natural patina.
